Definitely a great pic and, as for the crop, I much prefer your original: There is an interesting diagonal, from the moon, to the tower in the center, to the small stack in the lower left. Likewise, I see a rule of thirds in the original, it's just that I see the image being divided by diagonal thirds; the moon in the upper right third, the small stack in the lower left third with the tower compromising the central diagonal third. Maybe the ROT doesn't always have to be vertical and/or horizontal. I think your original image works great as it is.
Also, the capture of the moon's sphere, a result of earthshine, just lends one more very interesting aspect to the image. Regardless of whether or not it looks faked (which I don't think it does) it is a strong component of the image and should remain. (I'm guessing this was taken (most likely) after sunset, or possibly before sunrise.)
Addendum: Let me point out (IMHO) that in the original, there is a certain 'majesty' in the image, whereas in the cropped image it loses that majesty and becomes an image of a tower and a crescent moon. To me the greater story, the greater image, is found in the original.
