Just for Fun - Mexican Chachalaca

An old photo from about 2 1/2 years ago... Anyhow I don't think I've ever seen an image of this particular bird on the forum so I thought I would share.

Mexican Chachalaca's are very shy but unbelievably noisy birds, typically seen only at the crack of dawn. You can hear their squawks for miles on end... (no alarm clock needed) They hide in the tops of the highest trees and fly from treetop to treetop.

The only reason I managed this shot was because I climbed up onto the roof of an abandoned house to get closer to these birds which were feasting on some kind of seed from the flowers of the tree.

Anyhow, sharing just for fun and hoping it is a new bird for most folks.

Thank you to everyone for your comments. They are unusual birds that look a little bit like a roosters (to me) and they are especially fond of mangoes. He/she does look a bit piqued, likely because of me hanging about.

Anyhow just a very unique bird, seldom seen...

Great shot, a lot of character captured along with what I am sure is ornithologic fidelity. Great to have the story with it, too.

Thanks Mark. I had to look up ornithologic fidelity. Climbing up on top of things is one way to try to get on the same level as the bird.

That is what is called "dedication"...lovely shot, but I wouldn't for the life of me, climb up the roof of an abandoned building to get that shot either. I have not seen any of that sort of bird either.

    Thanks Nandakumar, Jim and Isabel.

Isabel, I looked it up and its proper name is "West Mexican Chachalaca" found only in Mexico on the Pacific Coast in the states of Jalisco extending inward to the state of Oaxaca. However, I photographed this one in the state of Nayarit, very near to Jalisco.

It was far from a perilous climb. And in the city getting to the top of a building allowed me to get closer to an eagle, albeit this building had a staircase leading to the rooftop. So rooftops come in handy.
