So many questions

Amaryllis stigma shot in morning light with Nikkor 105 mm micro (handheld), ISO 200, f/6.3, 1/400, -1.33 ev



I would like to keep the OOF anthers in the shot, but am bothered by the red color cast they have taken on at their left edge. Should I be? If so, any suggestions as to how to deal with it? I have Aperture, Nik, Lightroom, and Photoshop, but just getting started with the latter two.

Hi Janis,

Beautifully captured but I can not offer any suggestions other than if it were mine I would not bother about it. The colour is reflected from the petals and often a problem when shooting bugs on certain flowers.

There is a slight chance some of it is chromatic aberration but best focus seems to be on the one going back into the shot to me and I am not at all sure I can really see any on that so it's probably slight out of focus blur really.

If you try chromatic aberration reduction sliders it's best done in the raw converter if you can but the image will be re debayered each time a change is made making it a slow process. It has to be done on the full sized image as well.

I not only like the red tones that you mention but also feel that removing them would make the image less attractive.

The details on your amaryllis are so cool!

I think red or any of the brighter colors are the most difficult colors to isolate. The color cast on the left side is, in my opinion, quite normal and not of concern.

I'm liking that image a lot but, am under the impression that you treated it as a snapshot, the colors are gorgeous. Next time do it right...take your time, haul out the tripod, prune if necessary, and generally work the shot, for it has great potential.

Not a snapshot exactly, as I am quite deliberately trying to improve my handholding technique with the 105 mm for those times when a tripod is not an option. I did shoot deeper DOF but the stigmata is not so beautifully illuminated in those frames, as the light was changing fast. Is it the point of focus and DOF that you would change? I may try again another day.

Mike: I think you might be right about the colour cast on the anthers enhancing rather than detracting from the shot. There are other frames though, where I think it really does detract.

JohnW: Thanks for your suggestion. I will take one of those other frames into ACR and see what effect the CA sliders have.
