Advice needed on nikon lens kit

    Hi!

I am Murali Nair from India. I need some advice on which Nikon lens to buy next. I have a Nikon D3 with a 50/1.8AF, 35-70/2.8 and a 70-210 / 4-5.6. I need to buy a wide angle and a portrait lens.

I had zeroed in on the 20/2.8 and 105/2 DC. My friends advised me to sell my old tele and try the 80-200 /2.8 as it gives a better range and is not too bad a portrait lens. Also, should I save up and buy the 16-35/4?

    Confused!

    Appreciate any advise on this.

    Thanks,

    Murali

It depends on what kind of photography you do. The 20 sounds great for wide angle photos and it's fast. The 105/2 only if you need the extra speed or want better control of DOF. How does the 80-200 give better range than your 70-210??? Though it's better by about 2.5 stops. The 16-35 sounds best of all if you can live with f/4.

Thanks for your advice! I largely shoot street and portraits more in available light. Extra range of 80-200 as compared to getting a 105/2.

    Maranello,

Do you find it difficult to shoot street photographs, I found the residents of India to be very aware of their surroundings and candid photography very difficult because of the citizens inquisitiveness?

True! People are quite aware,, on the other hand there is enough crowd on most streets to be not seen with a camera that easily and hence I use focal lengths above 180mm to get street candids. Most young people 'pose' when they see a camera, older people are much nicer and easier to shoot. Some shots of Indians by the street in the following link. Cheers!

    Maranello,

Very nice photos, especially #30, the moonlit scene.
