    My 2014 Weekly Photos - Part 2

I will try to post at least one photo per week during 2014. The scenes will vary to show something of the area where I live and things going on here.

In order to keep this thread withing a reasonable size I will split it into 4 sections. Part 1 is here:
    My 2014 Weekly Photos

Week 14 - Prawle Point, the most southerly tip of England; if you exclude part of Cornwall (a lot of Cornish people don't consider themselves to be English)

    My 2014 Weekly Photos - Part 2

7D with Tamron 24-70 lens. 1/800 F11 Iso 400. I needed a fairly fast shutter speed for the surf and a narrow aperture for the focus depth. Because of the wide range of exposure options here, I metered around the scene and manually entered some average settings. A merge of two Raw conversions with different exposure settings.

Be careful when you open the gate!

The paths around here can be treacherous and often involve clambering over rocks with a drop to the sea on one side. No place for a pensioner with a heavy backpack of camera gear!

    The plump person excluder.

A typical example of the path. With my sense of humour, I like to think they create obstacles like this to prevent overweight people from damaging the track.

    My 2014 Weekly Photos - Part 2

1/500 F8 Iso 400. I should have dropped the Iso by half but this was just a quick shot without any thought. In fact I didn't expect this to be a keeper; but it nicely demonstrates the narrowness of the path.

Bunkers from a World War 2 gunsite.

Just behind Prawle Point, these were well hidden amongst the natural rocks and undulating ground.

    My 2014 Weekly Photos - Part 2

    1/250 F11 Iso 200.

Geoff -- I am not going to comment on how good you took these shots because they already are (to me anyway). This place looks like a good place to linger around to discover little rock pools with its sea denizens...things we like to do when we were young ...

    Thanks for the comments.

Isabel, the areas shown are fairly steep sided rocks into 30 ft or more of water. The rock pool area is on the other side of the headlands in a shallower bay which runs along to Start Point, with the lighthouse. A few years ago this area was placed into the top 10 rock pool areas of Britain.

But the access roads are rather narrow without many passing places. Typical Devon lanes!

Anyway, this is the rock pool area.

Nice photos Geoff. I like the plump person excluder especially. Good textures and contrast in that photo.

    Geoff F,

Very nice series. Did you take any photos of sunset at Cornwall?

    Thanks for the positive comments.

Sunset photos looking towards Cornwall (which some people regard as being a different country!) don't really work from here because of the location angle. We are so far south in England that the sun sets over the sea, but it can be OK with the right scene.

But over the past few years, we have had little in the way of good sunset skies here. And by then I tend to be doing other things.

Week 15 - The woodland residents have been interbreeding with strange results.

Another day helping to do maintenance work in the woods, with other volunteers. When someone looked down and said what is this!

    My 2014 Weekly Photos - Part 2

A double flowered primrose. 40D with Canon24-105 lens 1/400 F11 Iso 400. It was in shade and the sky was cloudy which all made for problems. I did take more shots with different settings but this one seemed to work best.

Other blooms on the same plant were normal. I have seen thousands of primroses previously but these are the first double blooms that I have found

And for anyone who isn't familiar with English primroses, here is a normal bloom; plus a Bee Fly getting a free meal.

Recently I posted a photo of a Caddis Fly which was shot under difficult conditions so I wasn't totally happy with the results. Well I've found another and this time I managed slightly better although still difficult to find a good angle.

Interesting shots Geoff. I particularly like the Caddis Fly. Are double headed Primroses particularly unusual?

Double headed versions of single wild flowers are generally uncommon, unlike specially bred garden blooms.

I sent this photo with my normal monthly wildlife records and they are sending it on to an expert. This sort of thing is quite possible but nobody seems to have actually seen it themselves in a totally wild primrose.

    Hi Geoff,

I especially like the Caddis fly image, and I also very much liked the other Caddis fly image you posted somewhere.

Thanks. And for my next week . . .

Week 16 - Getting ready for Easter

Harbour workmen laying out mooring pontoons for the coming season.

    My 2014 Weekly Photos - Part 2

I purchased a pocket camera (Fujifilm X20) a few weeks ago for scenes like this when I don't want to lug aroung a 'real camera'. Haven't used it that much but there have been occasions when it has proved useful. More suitable for a jacket pocket than tight fitting trousers though. But I have reached an age where loose trousers and jackets are sufficiently trendy!

    1/480 F10 Iso 200.

Mmmmm, the Cadis Fly...is that what fisherman are trying to imitate when fly fishing?
    Nice series and education, thanks.

Yes Nancy, caddis fly larvae are aquatic and eaten by fish so anglers tie imation larvae to their hooks. In fact when searching the internet for identification checks I was finding a lot more about these lures than the real life flies.
