This is our state flower, the Texas Bluebonnet, which only blooms once a year in the spring. I have cropped it down, but am not sure if further cropping is needed/necessary. C&C welcome please. (I hope I posted this correctly.)

I was in Houston a couple of weeks ago and saw them on the side of the highway. Presumably planted as I never saw them in the Houston area when I lived down there. They are lovely blossoms. Elsewhere called lupine. But Texans do everything their own way

Hi Don,
Welcome back to Cambridge in Colour! Very nice to see you posting images for critique. I've learned so much from doing so.
A very pretty image! I love the rich colours. If it were my image I would crop just below the 3 purple more softly focused petals to eliminate the out of focus flowers just below, and also a bit off of the bottom right hand corner of the image (for the same reason) to place full attention on the full beauty of the Blue Bonnet.
If you can photograph these flowers again I would love to see a field of these beautiful flowers all in sharp focus, or perhaps just a single Blue Bonnet with the background blurred away.

Yes, I would crop quite a bit tighter, as Christina suggested; or something similar.
Getting good outdoor real life flower shots is so difficult, and I get many rejects.
Now, I tend to regard scenes like this more as flower portraits than overall landscapes and follow the 'general rules' for portrait shots. Treating the blooms as though they were people.
Every year I try to take landscape type shots of English Bluebells. And they all end up getting ditched unless I have some definite subject in mind and use most of the flowers more as background colour.

In our area of Texas they just now start to show - I may be able to get some shots by the end of the week, hopefully.
