    Out on a Limb

A few recent bird on a stick photos. Natural environment. Me sitting in a chair blind fairly close to a feeder. Before setting up I found likely landing limbs with uncluttered distant backgrounds, considering light direction. I had done some mico adjustments to my 100-400mm lens and was trying it out. C&C always appreciated.

They are all beautiful, as David said....and I agree. Each one has their own characters, poses and colorations as well as expressions. I never thought a field sparrow could be so beautiful, but you showed me through this shot. She looks so sweet...That American goldfinch looks a bit sad but she is pretty too.

Beautiful series, very warm and calming, with a nicely defocused and uncluttered BG that lets us concentrate purely on the excellent color and detail you've captured. I also am interested in your micro-adjustments. I did that satisfactorily with my prime lenses, but found the same adjustments didn't seem to hold over the whole range of focal lengths on my zooms. Did you adjust for the 400mm focal length, and have you found it is still acceptable at shorter lengths?

    Hi Terri,

All lovely... My favourite is #5, gorgeous detail and colour, beautiful bird (and pose) set off by a gorgeous background!

I really like the mood in all of these, especially with the special lighting in the first one. Consider toning down or eliminating the bright light in the top left corner of #2, #3 and #5.

    Re: Out on a Limb

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions.

David, depending on your camera (I have a Canon 7D), you may be able to make minor adjustments to calibrate your lens to your specific camera. There is lots of info on the net about it but here is one link that I thought explained the reasons fairly well.

    http://www.ophrysphotography.co.uk/p...adjustment.htm

Kevin, I still need to do some more work on the adjustments. To answer your question, I did only calibrate at the 400mm FL because that is where I shoot with that lens most of the time. But I've read that what you are saying is true about it not holding up at different FLs on the zoom lenses. I haven't really tested it because I need to do a better job of calibrating. With the recommendations on distance from subject, I really need to be outside to do it and we've had so much wind that I haven't been able to. I didn't feel like I got consistent results with my first calibration so I want to set it up with the recommended distances and with better light to minimize the effect of those variables. At any rate, my preliminary adjustment was only +2.
