Maybe I should offer this much to (maybe) clarify: I am not one to expect finished images coming straight out from the SD card into an editor that does everything for me. On the contrary, I work with RAW images & and an editing program (Aperture primarily, LR is new for me) in order to have good tools to work with the image data I have captured in my shots.
That said, a first look at thousands downloaded images (I HAVE indeed surpassed my first 10,000 (so hopefully the worst is behind me!)) has never resulted in anything similar to this. I shoot mostly where I live (Michigan, USA) so I am VERY familiar with overcast shooting conditions that I often find give really washed out highlights, especially in the sky itself. This does not resemble that sort of situation very much.
I came into this discussion with the belief (that I still hold) that the editing program and my actions with the editor are NOT the problem. I firmly believe I could load this shot into any editor with any default or other settings and get essentially the same result: washed out colors but for some small area in the images.
Something else happened and I think it is true, just as Mike has said, that I just will never know--unless it gets to be a constant result with this camera or card, in which case I might have to seek a definitive answer or purchase new equipment.
Thanks everyone for your input and your patience. Sorry if I muddied the waters by leading off my question with the whole SOOC thing.
