    Flower photo

I've been playing with 4/3 lenses on m 4/3 with the adapter and happened on a Sigma 105mm F2.8 4/3 lens. Ist result using rather dim available light. The flowers about 3 1/2 times life size in the shot. From a camera jpg with minimal pp. The dark centre gave enough contrast for a reliable focus.

Also wanted to do some 1:1 to see how that works out but suitable items were moving in the breeze.

Yes wind rock is always a problem with outside flowers. What I have done is to tie a clothes peg to a short cane and use that to support the stem just out of sight.

Good detail in the petals John from the lighting you had available.

I find the grey areas in the background interesting in that I took a close up flower shot in early morning dim diffused light the other day and although the background was all large OOF green leaves much of them also turned out grey. It did not make any sense to me.

It's a dianthus and the leaves are grey blue green. You can see the leaves of a green plant to the left.. The rest is black soil and maybe a bit of brown fence at the back. I under exposed a bit so that the background would be dark when the flower was brightened. It's very overcast here and the shot was taken a bit before 7PM.

I've decided I like it so am touching out the black spots. The under exposure was a bit too much really but I like the effect. It was hand held but I'm not sure if the camera can manage at 1:1 plus me.

Looks to be a decent piece of glass which is pleasing.

Nice effort, looking forward to seeing you put the lens through its paces.

Very nice. Beautiful soft seemingly true to life colour and detail. I also love the perspective.

Good shot AJ...I am beginning to like pink....and magenta...I was just reading some articles on shooting flowers. 'Would be interesting to try them out while the rest of the populace around here is still asleep...

The colours are correct accounting for the under exposure which make the pink stronger and darker. I've been messing with LAB adjustments to fix that but prefer the original so far.

The perspective is a problem in some ways. 200mm full frame macro lenses can be bought but the effects are pretty extreme. I've used 100mm on m 4/3 on insects and haven't really notice anything but it this case it has flattened the flower and bought the leaves closer. The main problem with using 50mm or 60mm is that the working distance starts to be a problem at higher magnifications. It also seems that they don't actually do 1:1. It looks like they say that due to the crop factor and are actually 1:2. I believe some people one way or the other use 140mm or even more on APS.

A lovely image and at that scale almost looks like a peony. Maybe consider doing a square crop ?
