Interesting Series. The first one stands out for me.
Hi Erick,
An interesting set of critters, I especially like No 2 and No 3 with his boot on the adults eye.
Erick, are you heavily cropping these? if not, looking at the settings you are using and with your gear you do not seem to be getting the image quality that should be possible.
Grahame
to John & John2, thanks..Grahame, thanks and yes, these images are heavily cropped..couldn't find a better angle to shoot them..Image #1 & #4 is about a foot from the ground in the middle of the bushes so when i took a series of shots, i was in a very unstable position. shot #3, the grasshopper was just incidental, i didn't noticed it until i took the shot and checking the lcd, its bright red eyes stood out..i was shooting the little bug #2..i couldn't shoot them too near, afraid that they bugged out on me, so i shoot them instead at a distance of between 3- 6 inches away..the weather yesterday was cloudy, and i didn't up my ISO that much, still trying to get to the right setting in a given condition..i would be glad if you could somehow advice as to the right mixture of aperture, shutter and ISO settings..i could always go back to the location and reshoot some..
Hi Erick, I got your PM.
3-6 inches seems reasonably close with your 60mm, I have 6 inches between lens and subject with the 105mm at it's maximum magnification.
Looking at the Exif data on all the images your settings are all reasonable and if these were giving you good exposures that you did not have to compensate greatly for in PP it has to be due to the cropping.
Looking at each I do not think you have a problem with the sharpness captured in camera. I would be interested to see an un-cropped and non PPd version of No 2.
Grahame
Nice series, Erick...I like #1 and #3. No 3 in particular reminds me of The Lion King where the little guy was trying to wake up his dad because the dad promised he'd take him out early in the morning...![]()
Well done Erick,#1 and #2 are my pick
David
thanks David..i like #1 too..if only i could shoot it in another angle and IF and only IF i could overcome my fear of spiders![]()
Hi Erick,
From this SOOC image I would suggest you have figured your settings pretty good. Exposure is good, sharpness is good and noise is pretty low so they have to be near enough spot on. I hope you don't mind but I did a very quick (because that's all it needed) job on it.
As I was going to crop a bit I removed some noise in ACR first, a very slight increase in exposure, a minor levels adjustment and very minor sharpening. The reason for my crop was to make both the critter and flower which you captured so well significant subjects of the picture. I suspect there's scope for minor WB and saturation adjustment if wanted.
I have overdone the petals slightly but this is easily pulled back.
Grahame
nice rendering Grahame, i was too the focused on the bug that i didn't noticed flower..thanks..
Hi Erick,my fav. are #1,#2 and #3#2 improved a lot with Grahame's edit,it is a very nice composition with the flower so I think it is better to keep it this way.
