Orange Tip Butterfly and Murphy's Law

Male Orange Tips are flitting around looking for females and only briefly resting for a few seconds. They fly around me but I can't get withing 6 ft of them with a camera. Last year I never managed one shot. Although one actually landed on my camera for a few seconds when I was a couple of feet away looking at something else.

Today, after the insects went a little quite, I changed to my Tamron 24-70 for some flower shots. And as I was preparing to find a suitable angle; two Orange Tips started fighting over ownership of my intended flower subject. One eventually landed there a few feet away from me!

And I knew that if I tried to change lenses it would be gone. But I gradually managed to edge my tripod forward until the lens was within 10 ins of the butterfly and took a few shots from a suitable angle before it flew off.

At 70 mm the resulting crop won't be big enough to make a large print but I could squeeze a 12 ins print from the image.

    Also found a Tortoise Bug.

Nice capture of the Orange Tip Geoff, and a second critter thrown in as a bonus.

The butterfly is very beautiful, Geoff ... and landing on the flower is a bonus...it creates a story. Well, the bug is a bonus too. Very sharp.

I captured a bug the other day, but we were too busy so I think it is dead now...hmmm......

    Thanks to the positive comments.

Will have another go tomorrow and see what else is lurking in the undergrowth.

There are a few Brimstone butterflies buzzing around but they are also males which don't settle well. May have to wait for some calmer females a little later.

Very nice capture Geoff. Finding the insect is only half the story. Capturing it in a nice composition like the orange tip, is the hard part. Nice work.
