Landscape/From a day in the woods

I don't have a GND filter yet ,that's why the hills seem a bit dark.Well the sun was behind the clouds and the atmosphere was a bit gloomy in the morning. So,I think the image reflects the reality BTW I'm starting lesson 4 which is 'layers' in photoshop book tomorrow. So,after learning it I hope I will be able to make some local adjustments in the images and hills won't look dark anymore

Your comments are appreciated as always.

    Binnur,

Image looks pretty good, probably showed highlight exposures in the sky area but that's to be expected.

Sometimes, Binnur, all you can do is to expose for the brightest area and let everything else be on the darker side.

Often you can recover a little from the shaddows just by careful use of Curves adjustment, providing that doesn't also affect other areas, like the sky. And sometimes, using an adjustment layer with a mask, you can selectively apply the variation.

But there will always be times, like this sort of skyline, where you just have to accept that there is a greater tonal range in a scene than can be easily edited.

But brightening the foreground, even if that has to gradually fade to a darker skyline is usually worth trying.

Once you get used to using layers and masks you will wonder how you managed without them.

    Binnur,

Open this picture in PS, click layers > duplicate layer, a dialog box opens and you can rename the layer or leave it default. Then select the dodge tool (looks like a lollipop), you should then be able to select shadows, midtones or highlights to work on. If you want to increase exposure on the hill sides select shadows or midtones. Use the slider to adjust the effectiveness of the tool, turn it way down to around 20%. Then simply click and drag the areas you want to brighten. Remember, the undo button is your dear friend.

When you get it where you want, flatten the layers and save as. Be sure to change the file name so you don't effect the original file.

    EDIT:

    Binnur,

I hope it's ok I did a quick edit on your photo just to give you an idea. I realize how subjective this can be so if this is not agreeable with you please let me know and I will remove it.

Nice shot Binnur. I like how the road curves off out of sight. Just makes you wonder where it'll take you.

Thank you John I decreased the highlights in PP, but without a GND filter this is what I could get. After learning layers in PS,I hope I can do better

Thank you very much Geoff for viewing and commenting I have a shot from that day ,exactly the way you said that 'exposed for the brightest area and let everything else be on the darker side'.I took that shot intentionally because I wanted to practise the grad.nd filter effects and layers function in PS.Today I'm starting to learn 'layers' with the help of my PS book and I'm planning to upload that photo after editing with layers function in PS .I hope I can manage it !

Many nice elements of composition - I like the curved leading line and all three, slightly different triangles. Binnurs comments on dealing with tonal range make sense to me. Great sky. I don't think absence of a single point of interest bothers me since the scene/mood (with that great sky), hold this together so well.

I understand the learning curve. Been there, done that...just myself, me and just I. So now if I have forgotten some areas in Photoshop that I want to use, I just google the topic and read up and follow their instructions then do what I think was needed. At the least, understanding terms and terminologies becomes easier with the flow of instructions as flog along. If you follow Bob's instructions above about layers, it is easier to reach your goal. Hang in there, mate...some cobwebs from learning will clear up soon for you too...I remember reading someone said, crop ratio in Photoshop and so as not to be considered too ignorant I googled "crop ratio"... ...not that I need to prove myself...

I like the composition, Binnur. Roads leading into the distance always make me wonder what is around the bend, or who / might emerge there.

Even easier than dodging / burning in CC - just apply a layer (ctrl J), set the blending mode to screen, and adjust the opacity to your taste. Then add a mask and paint out the sky. Job done.

Thank you Greg,I will try your suggestion too.I think photoshop offers a lot of ways to do the same thing. So,I think the best way is trying all of them to learn
