Well I just got back from the local camera repair shop. He said the damage is beyond his skills. He wouldn't venture a guess at what it may cost to repair. So I guess it's off to Nikon tomorrow for an estimate at least.

Having to get it an 'enforced purchase' situation is not nice, but hopefully a new purchase will dampen some of the annoyance/disappointment about what happened.
