The End Of The Road To Nowhere

This cemetery was first used in 1780. It was founded by the Seventh Day Baptists. Between 1810 and 1820 at least 4 *accidental* deaths occurred within the Sabbatarian Community. The last member left the area in 1820 and the properties were confiscated by the local community. Sadly, in the early 1970's the cemetery was severely vandalized with headstones broken, knocked over and stolen. Today it's a sad, forlorn place that, while regularly maintained, leaves no clue as to who is buried there.

I am sad for them, and their descendants. Your photo captures the barrenness that is there now. Yes, these things happen, sometimes when the roadbuilders demolish cemeteries.

That certainly conveys the feeling of desolation, Jack. It kind of reminds me of a burnt out homestead.

I can't understand people vandalising gravesites. Last year some rocket scientists broke into the crematorium grounds and stole the brass plaques from the memorials. How low can you get...

I can't understand it either - and I agree with the burnt out homestead metaphor.

Thanks Pania. I know of one cemetery that is now underwater. It was severely flooded in the 1955 hurricane. Subsequently the graves were moved to high ground as a dam was built to prevent future flooding downstream. At least there was a greater good to that one. In this cemetery is was just plain, stupid vandalism.

Thanks Greg. Apparently one large headstone remained. It was stolen in 2010. Mindless. At least with burned out homesteads one can assume the person or persons abandoned it. Not so easy from a grave.

Thanks Izzie. You asked where the road went to in my other post. This is where it went.
