    A shot to die for

I understand that it takes some commitments & determination to get the shots that we really want. I once waited for 4 hours in the cold for good light to set up a portrait of my partner and I in front of the Eiffel Tower. The other time, I was almost clipped by a Taxi trying to get a different angle of the Colosseum but . THIS has to worst idea in the history of bad ideas

The 8 stops ND Singh ray Trio filter may conquer day light but I don't think they made it bullet proof.

It was our honeymoon trip. As soon as the tour bus dropped us off at the hotel we caught the train to the Eiffel tower at around 5.00 pm and thought that we may have missed the golden hour but believe it or not this was taken at around 8.30-9.00 pm. There was a lot of people around and It was a "mission impossible" to remote fire camera on tripod without tourists walking into your shots. I used an IR remote which was a piece of junk and only worked intermittently and because of that getting ready for the shot was a nightmare. We managed to get around 10 shots at 2 different locations but only 3 or 4 were ok (TTL failed, flash didn't fire etc). Looking back what I would give for radio signal remote or an assistant. It is not my best photo by any means but given the predicament, my partner being so patient and how little I knew about taking photos at the time. This was one of my favourite photos.

    Cheers

Far too much testosterone on view. You wonder what is lacking when people (photographer and the those with the guns - I appreciate that those who believe in the right to own firearms will object to this) have to behave like that.

The video could at least have finished with us seeing one of the resulting images.

By the way, Dean, that's a superb image.

    Have a guess :)

Re: A shot to die for

I think folks possibly need to think a little deeper on that one; on the face of it it looks like a dumb idea, but we've only seen it out of context. No range master would allow that "on a whim", so my bet is that the whole thing is carefully staged - probably with the two closest to the 'tog firing blanks as some suggest.

Dean that place looks like a regular settings in a gun training class. If it is, they do not use blanks. We certainly didn't when my husband and I did our training on any of the mandatory levels of accuracy here in Missouri.

Well, one very dumb photographer - but what about those irresponsible idiots actually shooting in his direction?

    Thanks for sharing.

Re: A shot to die for

When I went through basic training in the U.S. Army, my biggest fear by far was shooting my weapon on the firing line. That's because some of the people with me on the firing line, mostly teenagers, did the most stupid things without thinking. That was despite that the drill sergeants were closely on the preventative lookout for things that could go wrong.

I would feel much safer being that photographer facing the shooters than being a shooter in basic training.

That photographer is also probably much safer than any of us are when we get in our cars and drive on the highway, especially on a holiday that is traditionally observed by a lot of people drinking alcohol.

    I agree.

As for the apparent idiot shooting the shooters, the question it raises in my mind is "Why"? Given he's shooting stills, what does he achieve that shooting a posed shot wouldn't give him?

Izzy, I thought they used live rounds too as I could see the impact of bullets hitting the back gorge. But even if they used blanks, I wouldn't want to be anywhere near the firing line. There were a lot of guns and a lot of rounds went off. Even Hollywood big box office had its mishap (ie Brandon Lee death in the Crow) let alone a local shooting range. Not sure what he was trying to achieve but he could've just use a tripod and remote trigger it.

That's what is so perplexing, that he didn't do that.

Re: A shot to die for

What puzzles me is the fact that whoever is in charge of that range actually allowed this to happen. Not to mention all of the morons on the firing line thought it was a good idea. I'm guessing this is a CCW class......so we have the blind leading the blind. It's a beautiful thing.

None of us is as dumb as all of us. Stupidity apparently grows exponentially as the group gets larger.

Re: A shot to die for

Jeremy's thread indicating that he almost got hit by a car reminds me that photographers shooting vehicle races are probably in a lot more dangerous situation than the guy shooting this firing line. The difference for me is that there may be no other ways to shoot vehicle races and there are clearly safer ways to make the photo the guy at the firing line was trying to make.

A simple solution would have been to used a tripod and a remote shutter...dah!
