    Men and their toys...

We went to Creve Coeur so I can reshoot my fire truck shots...and the barn. I ended up playing with these men. Time stood still while we were having fun. These guys play rough! We all had a ball until hubby told me we should be heading home. Crap! I didn't get any barn nor fire truck shots. Time to cook dinner...

Love the series - nice pictures. You can tell the men's devotion to their toys.

Nice set. I would have loved to see some panning shots of these guys moving.

I'm sure you'll be at the airshow 3-4 May for shots of the Blue Angels. If you're around Saturday morning, stop by the Boeing tent and say hello. I will be volunteering in the morning and rented a lens to try out in the evening.

Sure. We will be there on both days...I was burnt out after our event, so I barely see nor talk to Eric Downing too, who owns the Douglas Skyraider, for two years now. It will be a time for some catching up to the other aviation guys too. (Eric and his wife owns 4 big industrial hangars at our airport.)

The guys were not moving much. We were all sitting down in each of our golf carts operating each cars at the back of one of Eric's hangar. It was fun. ..

Thanks for looking and commenting. So you work for Boeing? We have three neighbours who do too.

Now a Douglas Skyraider is a real MAN's toy! It's been many years since I powered up an AD-4. We had one take off from Quonset Point NAS with the wings still folded! One of the few single engine prop driven aircraft that could fly coast to coast without refueling!

Compared to the jets, in Vietnam, those things were considered to be flying aircraft carriers for the huge ordinance capacity and time over target measured not in minutes but rather hours! One of the few aircraft capable of taking off with an ordinance payload the exceeded the weight of the aircraft. One of my all time favorites.

It's not a SkyRaider, that was the marketing guys. It's a SPAD!

Every US aircraft has an official name like Skyraider, stratofortress, etc. But, once it is assigned in the forces it gets a nickname like Warthog or BUFF or Spad. Since the AD-1 already had AD in it's name it seemed good to revive the name of a WW I fighter.

    This is the original Spad

    Men and their toys...

and in the age of jet fighters and bombers the AD-1 was a throwback propeller plane so it got named Spad.

Super! I worked at an overhaul center in the early 60's where we did the AD-4 Skyraider, the A-4 Skyhawk, the A-6A Intruder and a smaller number of other navy aircraft. I was working in avionics so we would tie down the tail of the AD-4 and run-up the engine to run checks on all the electronics gear just prior to it's first flight following overhaul. That 2,700 HP radial engine has a lot of kick to it!

Oh OK...I've never asked before why a particular plane is a Warthog either though I have shot a lot of them at airshows like in Sun n Fun (I did not go this year)...now SPAD is a new term before...thank you. #2 is the same as what Eric Downing has but his is dark blue in colour. Beautiful beast. It does not fly very fast though...

Impressive! My husband Bill worked on avionics too but in radios. He worked with Lyle Shelton on Rare Bear, an F8F Bear Cat powered by the Wright 3350 that has a bullet proof engine. The engine was modified to produce over 3,400 HP. Shelton was a naval aviator that flew ADs off navy carriers. His airplane 77L still holds more world records than any other propeller driven airplane. We do not know who owns 77L now but it still flies at the Reno Air Race every year. Shelton died in 2010. Both Shelton and my husband knew each other from their TWA years together. I think he was in his early 70s when he died. I haven't been to Reno for 2 years in a row now...
