Wide-Angle Lens Suggestions for Sony A7R

    Dear Folks,

I purchased the new Sony A7R and I'm looking for lens suggestions that would work for wide-angle architecture, real-estate and landscape photography. (Go ahead and say, "I told you so." I should have listened regarding the lack of lenses for this camera. I'm sure it will work out in the long-run though). I have the 24-70 FE mount lens. I would be willing to spend up to around $2000 U.S. for a great lens. I'm searching for something somewhat compact to match the compactness of the camera.

I know the Nikon 14-24 is a great lens, but it is huge and may somewhat defeat the purpose of getting this compact camera in the first place. (I will be shooting primarily from a tripod).

So any great wide-angle, fairly compact lenses out there that can be suggested to be used with a adapter?

Thanks in advance to all who respond.

    Dave

Ummm...maybe wait and see if the 16-35/4 that's projected on the rumored lens roadmap materializes this summer?

Minolta Maxxum lenses are out there somewhere, as this one:

Samyang manual lenses 14 mm and 24 mm are also available in E-mount (as well as A-mount).

Thank you to all who responded. A follow-up please. It seems the Sony 10-18 (made for the NEX cameras) works well in full frame from about 13-16mm. Since I have a 24-70, wouldn't it make more sense to get the Sony 10-18 and just crop unwanted/vignetted areas instead of getting the proposed new FE 18-35, since 24-35 would be redundant? I just want to be sure I'm not overlooking something here.

Sometimes the 18-55mm kit lens at 18mm does wonders in tight spaces. Even a bridge camera at its shortest focal length can give you some decent architectural shots, just beware of noise for specific models.

How useful is an ultrawide while walking around to you? Sure, 24-35 is "redundant", but if 19-23mm isn't a normal "switchover" point for you, or you tend to combine walkaround with ultrawide shooting (e.g., cityscape + street), then having a range that extends into walkaround means less lens switching, or being able to leave the walkaround behind.

It is also a matter of how much the 13mm+vignetting vs. 16mm without vignetting is going to matter to you on the wide end. Basically which matters more: super-wide? or walkaround-wide versatility in combination with your ultrawide?

I just went through this on the micro four-thirds end of things: got the Oly m.Zuiko 9-18 vs. the PL 7-14. Sure, I only get 18mm equiv. vs. 14mm, but I can leave my 14-42 kit lens at home (since I used it at 14 about 95% of the time), since I've got 36mm equiv. Longer than that, and I'm more liable to go with one of my primes, anyway.

    Thanks for your comments inkista...

I will be using this camera for architecture, real-estate (for business) and landscape photography. I won't be taking many unplanned "walk-around" photos. I'll usually be using my tripod for my photos.

    Hi, Dave

I'm speaking from memory here, but doesn't Sony have a G series 12-24 priced right at 2k? The G series have beautiful optics- I have 2 of them so far and have been delighted with them.

Architecture / Real Estate photography - one of the perspective correction (Tilt / Shift) lenses comes to mind immediately.

Samyang does an f/3.5 24mm one and it is available in Sony e-mount. The reviews of the lens have said it is very good. If you want to spend more and use an adaptor, both Canon and Nikon make them. Both have a 24mm version and Canon has a 17mm version; but all of these are much more expensive than the Samyang.

I recently picked up the Nikon 24mm PC-E and am really enjoying it.

    All are full-frame lenses.

    Hi Kevin,

    I checked and couldn't find a Sony "G" lens in 12-24mm.
