It's still early and I wasn't hungry...then I looked at your picture and thought "hmm, that looks delicious" good exposure and the light isn't harsh. I'd say good job. But, if you are looking to amp up your food photography you should check out Nicole Young, she's written a book on food photography and her portfolio looks great.

Thanks Mavourneen for your comments. I checked the site you mentioned and it looks like the photographer has a few trick worth trying. On her page the pictures of food look pretty and colourful, and somewhat a tad on the white side to my liking.
I sure will try the trick about the steam.

Um, is it possible this shot is underexposed a tad?
Thank you Terry for you comment, is this any better?

I like the brighter image better but there is nothing "wrong" with the first image, as it conveys a different mood. Everything else about the first image seemed so clearly to be not by accident that I assumed you preferred the mood of the so-called underexposed image.

I mention this only because images of all types of subjects that pop are so popular that most people will probably prefer your revised version. That in itself doesn't make it a better photo. In the end, the better photo is the one that conveys everything you had intended.

I didn't object to the white nature of her photos but I was bothered that all but two or three table settings made use of light colors in the background. On the one hand, she should be congratulated for so clearly establishing a consistent style. On the other hand, her chosen style seems so limited in scope that it became a bit boring after viewing a dozen or so photos.

I only remember two photos showing steam (the chili pepper and the shrimp). In both cases, the steam looked as if it was behind the subject, not rising from it. That could be just me.

Looks good Louise. I was just going by how the histogram looked. This looks much better exposure-wise but it was a technical call.

    What do you think?

Thanks Terry. I think it depends on the monitor one is using to view the images. I do prefer the darker picture on the screen. On the other hand, if I get my images printed I find them too dark on paper and I think it may be that the computer light them from behind.

If your monitor isn't profiled and calibrated and if you're using any browser other than Firefox, all bets are off.

Erick thanks. I am glad you like the muffins. As this is not a food blog, I will refrain from posting recipe here. I will from time to time post picture of my results. The book is a project for the future, not too far I hope.

    I agree Louise.

I know "conveying a mood" has been mentioned. And that's cool but the only mood I would want to convey if I were shooting my peanut butter and jelly sandwich (the limit of my culinary skills) would be bright and cheerful drooling-all-over-your-chin hunger! Especially if I were using the shots for my own cookbook.

To do that I would do my best to produce accurate color, WB, exposure and great lighting so the beautiful food could stand up and speak for itself.

I think your adjusted shot would be a perfect accompaniment to the recipe showing how they should look when they come out of the oven.

Further, I think you have done a great job with it. Composition, it's tight, it speaks! I could smell them from here!
