    Do frogs count as pets?

A friend invited me to her property to take pictures of the emerging flowers and to admired the pond she created in the backyard. The where a big splash when I approved the pond. Don't worry she said, she will come back, its her spot, she just has to get to know you. Just wait a bit, you'll see. You wanna see too? Look into its eye…

Very very good Louise! As for your question on your topic, that had been answered before...if you name a critter, it means you now got a pet that you can't kill either. Does that make sense?

The dark colour is because it was cold, 8 Celsius. This is what my book on Amphibians and Reptiles of Quebec and the Maritimes tells me.

It is a great shot and I'm sure *she'll* be around all summer (this one is female, males have a much bigger tympanic membrane (ear covering). Your book is right about the color. Most frogs (amphibians and reptiles as well) will be dark in color when it's cold. Basically it's their solar panel. Dark colors absorb heat (thermal IR) and so the critters warm up more quickly.
My father told me stories of when he was kid and they would catch bull frogs and roast the legs over a fire. I've tried them once, cooked on butter and garlic; like little teeny chicken legs, and quite good.

Of course they can count as pets Louise but only if you have managed to get them to pose how you want

Good shot and spot on with the eye. These are really great subjects if you can get down low and right up facing them

Thanks Grahame. The tripod had two legs in the water here and the last one on the little stone hedge. the bullfrog is actually in shallow water. Lets say I was hoping that me and my camera did not fall into the pond all at a sudden!

It does look strange. At first glance one would think of those fake ones you can buy at the store. But no, it is a real bullfrog, cold and trying to warm up in the sun. I plan to go back and take more pictures next week.

Nice one, Louise. It is hard to imagine that these critters can survive the winter we just had!

Nice shot- they are so cooperative. You set it at a spot and it stays there- not to quick to hop away!

I think it was lethargic because it was cold.

Frogs have anti-freeze, yes Frank. I found the article searching the net to info on how frogs hibernate.
