It's Rodent Week!

Yesterday, I viewed Dusty's adorable squirrel pic, which inspired me to post my own rodents. The last one is technically not a rodent, but he does have buck teeth. C & C is welcome and appreciated.

How do you know the deer has buck teeth? The photo doesn't show them.

The light on the first two photos is very nice, especially the first one. Well done!

Hi Mike: I forgot to ask in my initial post if anyone can identify the type of squirrel in the photos. I think in a previous post, a similar little fellow was identified as a "grey squirrel". He is only about 8 inches tall. This is the only type of squirrel I have ever seen in my neck of the woods, yet 15 miles away in the "big city", there are tons of large black squirrels all over the place who are at least a foot tall. I have always wondered why the big city squirrels have never found their way out here?

Anyway, to answer Mike's question, I watched the deer graze for a while and, trust me, he has an overbite.

City squirrels prefer subways and late night parties.

Suzan - looks like a red squirrel to me. They are smaller and less common than the grey squirrel (which can actually be black, brown or grey).

I'm not in North America, but I would say grey squirrel. If your reds are the same as ours, I would expect ear tufts. But no matter, nice pictures.

The reds here do not have the ear tufts that their European counterparts have. This is definitely an American red squirrel.

Suzan, these are all great pictures! Each one shows the individual's character. I would agree that 1&2 are red squirrels.

Actually the last photo AND #3 are NOT rodents. Rabbits are in a distinct order, Lagamorpha. They have two pair of upper incisors, lack a bacculum and one other...unusual characteristic.

Now that the ID has already been done, I like #2 for it's pose. #1 has been done before hence my preference for #2. And #3...I like his expression even though I cannot by the life of me, remember what he is called. We trap and kill that one here in the Midwest. It's a shame.

Thank you everyone for the comments and feedback. It's much appreciated, and an extra thank you for those who were able to identify "Red the Squirrel". It is incredible how much information one can obtain from this site that has nothing to do with photography. For instance, I had no idea that bunnies were not classified as rodents. Who knew?

Suzan,friend of mine who does a lot of hunting told me only last week that if you see a deer with its tongue out it is actually tasting your scent/smell,says the nicest deer is on a plate....

Charming bunch well-captured. These critters are intrinsically appealing to most of us... I wonder why.
