Luskville Falls

Here are some shots of the Luskville Falls in Gatineau, Quebec. This was my first real chance at taking some shots of waterfalls and moving water. I had a short chance to play around with my tripod to get some slower shutter speed. I took some with a slow and with a fast shutter speed. I think I like the ones with the faster shutter speed better as they look more dramatic.

High flow falls like this typically look better shot at high ss for the reason you stated. It looks more dramatic. The slow ss that you selected for most of them was kind of between. Neither freeze frame nor silky. The only one with the slow ss that really looks silky in no.3. And interestingly that is the lowest flow cascade which demonstrates the point.

Falls are really interesting subjects. Different water flows completely alter their appearance. Typically flows are higher in spring in most places, particularly in areas with snowpack and/or spring rains. Revisiting the same streams with different foliage, water flow, etc. can be a great learning experience. And fun!

If you really want to get seriously in to photographing flowing water and how to get that balance between the fast and slow moving water and blending for best effect, have a read of the first 14 posts in this thread started by Frank Miller.

Dan, the reason why 3 looks more silky than the rest is that it is actually a combination of several shots. I think that these were more high flow than usual because it was in April right after a large melt. It is definitely a place I'll be returning to. The Gatineau Hills have many more trails for me to hike and even a cave to explore.

Donald, I'll be sure to read up on that thread. I'm hoping to work on this type of shot and figure out how to best take advantage of shutter speed with different types of moving water. I'm heading on a cross country road trip to Alberta and back through the US including a stay in Yellowstone so there will be lots of opportunities to take shots of waterfalls and moving water.
