    Went for a softer look

The rose was positioned in front of a mirror showing a cloud obscured sunny sky...

Beautiful image, Chauncey. I hope you're also inclined to try it in monochrome.

This one works better for me. The background does not compete and overwhelm the rose in this image.

    Nicely done.

I was...treated the background differently than the rose...not quite sure if I like it.

I definitely prefer the coloured version. The flower has lost too much character in the conversion.

    If you don't mind, Chauncey...

I converted using a red filter, darkened part of the left side of the rose to match the tonality on the opposite side, and slightly lowered the white point.

Even so, the color version's transition from grey to yellow is so subtle and gorgeous that it may always win out over a monochrome version.

Well done William! I would be interested to find out what techniques you used to obtain the softer look?

I wish...I wish that I had the foresight to "see" what image would make a big good print before setting it up and squeezing that shutter. Doing it for every shot is a profound PITA, what with all the stacking and merging and other requirements. Others have opined that it would look good were it really big, but I didn't anticipate it at all.

Absolutely beautiful, William - the coloured version, that is. I think the blue-ish background complements the creamy colours of the rose perfectly. I might be tempted to experiment and make the background only mono so as to preserve the tones in the rose; but really, I would probably just leave it as is.
