A beautiful pair Brian!
Really nice techs on the birds and nice poses. Looks like your a flash shooter? Difficult BG conditions to do much with. The lens you were using has some pretty bad CA at the high contrast OOF transitions.
Yep, this is Florida, I don't always use flash but it often comes in handy. Cardinals seem to like to nest and hang out next to houses so you often get some pretty dim light against a strong background. Put out some seeds and they are quite happy to mix with hmans. In this case, I didn't need to worry about shadows on the background so I just popped the SB-800 on the camera and went for TTL/BL/FP. I was close enough that the better beamer wasn't needed.
Nice shot. One problem I've never had to deal with in Alaska is shooting in conditions with too much ambient light. Now with high ISO cameras available our nice flat light is great for wildlife/birds.
