Mnaual and Automatic Focus Questions (two only!)

If my Nikon lens is set to M/A, in single servo mode, I can turn the focus ring after the camera obtains a focus without any problems...right?

So if focused to infinity in M/A, I could back the focus a little to capture more of the foreground assuming some mental estimate of the hyperfocal distance...right?

The camera will fire but it doesn't mean you'll get an in-focus shot. If you take your finger off the shutter and lightly press again the camera will attempt to automatically focus.

Agreed John; so there are two solutions.

    1. Don't take your finger of the shutter release after pressing half-way down; or

    2. Disable using the shutter release and use back-button focusing to set up the initial focus (assuming that the camera body supports this; I can confirm that the D800 does).

If your lens is designated AFS you can manually focus even if the M/A switch is set to "A". But some Nikon lenses that are not designated AFS should not be manually focused if the M/A switch is set to "A". If you do you are fighting the autofocus motor and may damage it. See the instruction leaflet that came with the lens to be sure.
