why is there poor people in the world?

Are they poor or do they just live their lives differently than us. There was a documentary by Marc Singer called Dark Days (2000). The documentary was about a group (hundreds) who lived inside the NYC subway system, they used CON ED electrical outlets when they were available, underground water, and found food wherever possible. Many of these people lived there because they lost their homes, but some lived there because they had difficulty relating to others. Eventually, the city removed them and tried to find homes for them but some are said to have found new ways of avoiding the system.
