    I need advice for books

Hi, I'm thinking of ordering some books about photography from Amazon soon. I'm sure to order Michael Freeman's book for B&W Photography. I also want to order some books about lighting and landscape photography but I don't know which authors' books are good for these subjects. I would really appreciate your opinions about the matter

BTW, From Oz to Kansas by Vincent Versace is on my list too for B&W.

Binnur I am not going to suggest books, but some articles I found useful and they are free, I am adding the link, Lee has some good overall articles and a great number of B&W ones, actually more B&W then the other.

Light: Science & Magic is widely recognized as the Bible on that subject. It's in its fourth edition, which speaks volumes about how widely it has been accepted. It covers everything from studio work to cityscapes and landscapes because, after all, we're always photographing light. It will be either direct light or reflected light that we're photographing, but it's always light.

For landscape work, my preferred reference is:

    http://www.amazon.com/National-Audub.../dp/1554079934

I lost my first copy, so bought another - then found the first one. If you were close, I'd give you one.

    Hi Binnur,

I also think Light: Science and Magic is a great book. I haven't finished reading and studying it but I'm very happy that I have it.

Other books that I adore also recommended to me by members..

Micheal Freeman - The photographers eye

I've borrowed his B&W book from the library and one day I intend to purchase it. I like all of his books.

The Art of Photography by Bruce Barnbaum and Mountain Light by Galen Rowell... I love both of these books because of the way the information is presented, stories behind the images... (why etc)

Thank you Mike, Glenn and Christina

Mike , I already marked as helpful the name of the book you mentioned about lighting when you suggested it in one of the forums in CIC, but I couldn't find it again among a lot of posts which I marked as helpful So, I'm happy I have got the name again.

Christina, I read The Photographer's Eye a few months ago. It is a good book to keep in your bookcase.

If you want some better idea of what is actually going on when you click that shutter, read Color Constancy, by Mark Ebner.

I will throw you a curve. When you are out and about in nature, you might want to take a flower picture or two and I have found Sue Bishop's flower books excellent. She teaches more with her examples than with words and it is very easy to follow her instructions. I think if a book deals well with one subject, that information can be applied across different topics. More on topic, I am a fan of Rob Sheppard, a longtime editor of Outdoor Photography, who has a Digital Landscape Photography book among many others. He is prolific.

Binnur, IMHO, buying books is, for the most part, a total waste of money. All of mine have been scanned briefly and deposited on the shelf, never to have been read again. The resources available on the internet far outweigh anything available in those books.
Learning/education of any subject, is best achieved by the simultaneous exercise of reading, writing, and speaking your subject matter and followed up by doing!

It all depends on your learning style. Personally, I like to start with a book to get a good overview of the subject, then move on to videos (with exercise files if possible), and then to have access to a "Reference Manual" (such as Victoria Bampton's Lightroom Missing FAQ), where I can look up what I need.

I think all can have their place in learning.

Other books are simply enjoyable to read.

I repeatedly review mine as highly valuable reference resources. I think the subject matter and the amount of material covered has a lot to do with whether a particular book gets used repeatedly. As an example, I can't imagine anyone "getting" or even needing everything covered in Light: Science & Magic in just one read.

Thank you Frank, Boyer, Dave and Mike . I will keep in mind your suggestions and opinions. For me, I like books very much but it doesn't mean that I don't look at the websites or I don't watch videos on the internet. I agree with Dave that everybody has got their own learning style

Re: I need advice for books

If you are still on the market for books, here are some that I owned and recommend:

Fil Hunter, Steven Biver and Paul Fuqua - Light: Science & Magic (kind of dry but good reference)

Gregory Heisler: 50 Portraits: Stories and Techniques from a Photographer's Photographer (he provides funny anecdotes and thoughts on techniue)

Josef Koudelka (Fototorst) - one of my heroes. No techniques in the book but very inspirational

Michael Freeman - The Photographer's Vision: Understanding and Appreciating Great Photography

Michael Freeman - The Photographer's Mind: Creative Thinking for Better Digital Photos

George Barr - Why Photographs Work: 52 Great Images Who Made Them, What Makes Them Special and Why

Bruce Barnbaum - The Art of Photography: An Approach to Personal Expression

Joe Mcnally - all his books (useful if you get into his style of photography)

Re: I need advice for books

Hi Rob I ordered some books and they arrived already but I will order some more in the future anyway, so thanks for your suggestions.

I have got Science & Magic, because I ordered it after I started this thread. But I haven't started reading it yet.

I read Photographer's Mind about 6 months ago and it is a nice book indeed.

I absolutely love Galen Rowell's books, especially "Mountain Light". It is a must-have for landscape photography. He always took the time to explain everything he did.
