I'm very much looking forward to seeing the rest.
Hi Christina! I'm playing with the images I took at the local Cabela's but I'm not at all happy with the results I got with my new Canon SX50 as far as noise goes. I had left the ISO on Auto and with the poor lighting and need for long shots, I'll need to go back with my tripod in hand to get better captures.

I may yet get a shot or two to post as I sift through what I have captured but most of the dioramas are not real close as they were in the Hamburg facility.

Thank you so much for viewing and commenting!

As I recall, Frank, you did some museum shots (New York?) a couple years ago that also seemed to pop right out of the screen.
I think you have the technique in hand. Anything to share ?

Well Kevin, my 'guess' is the combination of a well modeled (well lit with appropriate shadows) subject against a very flat background. Perhaps the almost total lack of background contrast provides above average separation between the foreground and background? In this case, the background was a flat wall with an appropriate distant scene painted on it.

It may be well worth experimenting with shooting background only scenes for the subject. Perhaps reduce the contrast and saturation then place the background scene behind a complementary subject much like a studio background is used in portraiture?

Once the process is clearly defined, I would guess that you could use masking and layers to apply the process to almost any appropriate composition where there is a clearly defined foreground, little or no middle ground, and an interesting but relatively bland background.

I would love to see if you or anyone else at CiC would attempt this as a goal. Perhaps by sharing experiences we could come up a distinct but pleasing 'look', particularly for wildlife imagery. Any takers?

    Hi Kevin and Frank,

The other factor that is relevant to 'the 3D effect' is the perspective of the image due to the relative shooting distances of various parts of the animals. In other words, it is because you were quite close to it - especially when compared to a real-life shot that would normally be taken from a significant distance using a telephoto lens.

Subconsciously, the brain recognises this and gives an enhanced 3D impression - well that's what I think

Here's a lucky shot I got from a closer than usual distance (for such a small bird) and I think this has 'the 3D effect' too, although you could argue it also has the benefit of good lighting, narrow DoF and angle of view.

In short, there's nothing quite like getting close to the subject, especially if wildlife (even if stuffed)

Blooming good PP there Frank, well done.

    Dave
