    10 stop filters

    Hello

Has anybody used a 10 stop filter on a Fuji Xpro1, I have used a Formatt Hitec with poor results.
It was used on a Fuji 18-55 zoom and the resultant photo showed a reverse reflection of the lens revealing the writing on the front of it.
If you have come across this please let me know.

Did you use the Filter in a "Filter Holder" which was sitting a distance forward from the front element of the lens and the lighting situation allowed the reflection to be in the resultant image?

If so, then this is an optical effect and not a result of the quality (or not) of the filter. Using a screw-on filter which is the exact filter diameter to fit the lens (i.e. NOT using set-up rings) and which has a low profile (i.e. a thin filter) should remedy this problem for that particular lighting scenario and all similar lighting situations.

If you do not want to buy a new ND Filter, then you might have success by building a 'matt box' from BLACK MATT CARDBOARD - effctively you need to "box in" all the sides of the filter holder from the filter to the lens so NO LIGHT can get into the spaces at the sides. This will NOT work far ALL lighting scenarios, but will be effective for most.

I suspect that you were shooting down around f/22 and close to the 18mm focal length.

The Depth of Field likely got you, based on the internal reflection issue that Bill pointed out.

I have a 10-stop B+W screw in filter (77mm) and performance has been flawless.

Yes - Good Point! I didn't think of that

If you are using a Filter Holder, then using the lens at the Wide Angle would compound the issue of reflections.
Stopping down would be an issue too, but the W/A, (if the filter is a distance from the front of the lens) would be more of an issue, I suspect.

Thanks for this I will try to cover the filter in future.
I was using it in a Cokin mount at the front position as the filter is wider, I hadn't thought this would cause a problem.
I will post a reply the next time I use it.
    Many thanks

I was shooting a f10 but will try the advice that Bill gave, the filter was not close to the lens.

    Many thanks

It's a known problem particularly in bright sun and for this reason I think that I'm right in saying that Lee filter holders now have an edge seal (see below). I use a 10x screw in filter on a Tokina 10-16 mm and with stepping rings (i.e. further from the front element) on a 14mm Fuji X with no problems.

    Re: 10 stop filters

Unfortunately, the Lee and HiTec filters have no anti-reflection coatings (frankly, I don't think my B+W does either), so internal reflections can be a problem with these product lines (I shoot with the Lee system). I have considered getting the Lee Matte Box for some time to help reduce reflection issues.

Flat filters are staples of the film and video industries that have moved over to still cameras; and in moves and film, matte boxes are virutally always used with this style of filter. I'm afraid I have not had any experience with the Cokin system, but have heard a lot of complaints from people that use it.

One approach some people use with flat filters is to hold them right up to the lens by hand. This may be an issue with long exposures, but worth a try too.

Thanks all, I have been looking at Lee filters and the big stopper is sealed so i have just ordered a set (out of town 7/5 set ).
will let you know how I get on.
I use a Hoya R72 Ir and this causes no problems (14mm lens) possibly because its a screw in filter

The Lee is reputed to have a reddish cast, whereas the B+W is neutral. This can be fixed in post.
