    More play with Tammy 17-50

It has become the tradition for small towns to usher summer in with community based festivals, usually it is an excuse for local businesses to advertise their wares and the community to unwind a bit. Albertville's is called Friendly City Days.....and last night was the fireworks. Perfect opportunity for Randy to play.

Cross that off my bucket list....now back to flowers and birds....then again....tomorrow is the parade

I like the images very much Randy. I want to try shooting fireworks one day too

I particularly like the last shot. All good though as you never quite know what the fireworks are going to do.

Binnur- I encourage you to give it a shot. These were not at all difficult. I found a spot about 1/4 mile from where they were launched, every setting was manual, kit was stabilized on the tripod, and I used the remote. I focused where I knew the shells were going to burst. Settings were f/16, ISO 200, shutter speed was 4 sec. I shot at a focal length of 17 mm to catch as much area as possible. Then it was sit back, enjoy the show, and click away.
I found timing was my greatest problem, a count to three after the shell was launched yielded the best results. My best results were of the small displays, the Grand Finale was just too busy.

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation Randy . I have noted it down for my future trials

Nice shots. Good enough for publication.

I have to ask though: Why the ISO200/F16 combo?

You would have achieved infinity at 10 yards. F16, would have resulted in significant diffraction, and ISO200 given more noise, particularly in darker areas.

I understand that the a lower shutter speed is required for this type of exposure though.

This is my first real attempt at capturing fireworks, I chose those settings due to my understanding that the D90 has to resort to an algorithm to achieve lower ISO: at ISO 200, f/16 allowed me to achieve the desired 4 sec shutter speed. Ultimately I did it because it worked

If you shot at F11 and ISO100, whilst keeping the FL constant, you would have achieved the same exposure result at the same shutter speed, whilst decreasing both diffraction and ISO noise. Increasing the FL to 20-25 would have had no significant effect on your DOF, whilst facilitating a sharper image, as lenses are typically at their worst at max wide or max narrow.

All good points, I am sure; but how is one to learn one's lenses without seeing what can be done at the extremes. All said, I was quite pleased with my results. Much improved over previous blurred attempts.
