When we received Mama Mia from a Los Angeles area shelter she was pregnant and did not look well. By midnight we needed to bring her to our 24 hour emergency vet. She was suffering from anemia and severe respiratory distress. Our vet also determined that one puppy was dead and in the birth passage. This resulted in the need for an emergency C-section. The vet and her staff saved Mama Mia's life...
The staff was also able to save the second puppy...
However, poor Mama Mia was too frail and sick to nurse her puppy. The staff tube fed the puppy throughout the night. In the morning, my wife put out a call for help to the San Diego rescue Organizations. They came through with flying colors with several offers to let Mama Mia's pup nurse from another mother.
We selected a rescue Chihuahua who had lost two of her four puppies. She and the pups were located only a half hour from our home. We were worried that the Chihuahua would not accept Mama Mia's puppy, but she instantly accepted the puppy and began to lick and nurse the little thing.
We received multiple offers from other rescue groups who would take our puppy and find surrogate mothers as well and some offers from wonderful rescue people who said that, if we could not find a mother to accept the pup, they would tube feed it 24/7.
What a wonderful vet and staff as well as a wonderful group of dog rescue people.
And thanks to that Chihuahua mother who accepted our pup as her own...
