I was looking through some files from November 2013 and came across this. In November I remember culling out the worst images and processing several substandard ones to see if they could be salvaged. I processed none of this series.

Nice surprise. But if someone had not asked me for different images of this barn it may have sat there for years.

My memory is too poor to remember what was happening at the time but I suspect I was juggling the position of the setting sun, lines in the clouds and keeping the edges of the barn straight (this was shot at 16 mm). Neglected to check the position of the barn relative to centre. Your point is taken however.

This was the only one in the series where the foreground detail was light enough to still salvage and not look weirdly over processed.

That is what caught me as soon as I started to process this. The possibility of getting some detail in the barn and grass without having the image look too artificial.

May have to consider HDR in the future. Could make more interesting sunset and sunrise shots.

Looking back it becomes easier to second guess, wishing you had done this or that. The difficulty of capturing such a sky is that it usually does not last long. I have seen such color in the clouds a few moments after the sun dips below the horizon, and a minute or so later the sun no longer hits the clouds, and they go back to grey. You have to be ready with your strategies before it is too late. You have to be ready to try different views and techniques quickly, especially if you want to change lenses.

One important element is to look for the light, where is it strong, too bright or too dark over the subject. How is it effecting the foreground? Where is the best spot to take the reading off your meter? What part of the sky? In other words, rather than thinking subject, think light! How well is the barn going to show up? Does it need more light, as in over-exposure. Definitely consider HDR in sunsets and graduated filters. How much sky vs. foreground? Where to place the horizon line? 80-20%? or 20-80% in ratio of land to sky?

Wonderful scene, isn't it! It is great you were there with the camera ready.i think you used the barn to nicely block the brightest part of the sun and we can still see detail of the barn. The snow makes it appear even more desolate. Another neat part is that we have no idea what is behind you or your proximity to civilization. All we see is the lonely barn.

I know I have seen gorgeous skies, run in to get the camera, and by the time I get back out, the sky has changed, the peak moment gone. But, then wait for the deep blue! Note here how the very top clouds have already started to lose their color, I do not think you needed to include any more sky. Because of the challenging bright light just above the horizon, your composition, placement of the barn works well.

I like the way the old barn sits so isolated and I would like to see some up close images of the worn wooden sides and doors, rusty hinges, etc. That would be a fun spot to return to again and again.

Four more months to go to finish the full cycle of the year with this barn. Then I will probably start over again! I seem unable to resist wandering out there to see how it is interacting with the light and sky.

Yes. I will try to get out this weekend for the solstice sunset as it promises to be in a good relative to the barn
