Wonderful light and composition. However, when viewing the image at anything other than the small size displayed here, no parts of the head are sharp. You used a shutter speed of 1/640. When photographing an animal moving rapidly from left to right, I would plan to use no less than 1/1000.

Mike, thanks for the advice. I haven't really done well with moving wildlife yet. I find I have trouble getting the shutter speed as fast as I need it without boosting the ISO to a nearly unusable level.
For this shot I was in the middle of taking shots of two deer who were standing still so I didn't need a fast shutter. Some jerk who was running the trail just ran up behind me and scared the deer off.

My wife and I were quietly walking on a trail when we scared off some elk that were standing in a lake. It was impossible for us to know they were there until we scared them. The same could easily be true of the runner that you encountered then and in the future. I don't know the specific details of your situation, but being a casual runner myself who admire people who run the hiking trails (I'm not that good), calling them jerks seems a bit harsh to me.

I'm all for running the trails/sharing trails but you need to try yo have respect for others. The deer was clearly visible just to the side of the trail and I was on the trail with my camera up, clearly taking pictures. The guy actually ran right in front of me, rather than going behind me where there was room. If he didn't see me or the deer then he must be oblivious to the world.
I'm not saying people shouldn't run the trail but the place I go to is a known hot spot for photographers and bird watchers due to the amount of wildlife. He should just be aware and respectful when people are taking photos of wildlife.
