Was this taken from the helicopter, or is the chopper somewhere in the image (I can't see it).

From the ground, 1/3 in from LH edge, a little bit less than 1/3 down from the top.

Easier to spot here.

To be brutally honest mate - very vibrant sky, but for my liking there's just too much of it ... it's almost "dimensionless", and seems to cry out for some kind of frame of reference.

No need to apologize, that's what I needed to hear my friend.

When I started out, the shadow of the clouds hanging down from the cloud deck overhead had a blue cast to them, but the helicopter was more visible. I decided to darken the shadows to get rid of the blue, but that reduced the contrast of the helicopter. Tough choice, but I went with the darker shadows and sacrificed the helicopter's visibility. I guess I'll go back to the drawing board and try again. Thanks, I appreciate your honesty.

For what it's worth Terry, I've had many shots in the past that depite my best efforts, "just don't fly" -- I just give up and move on to something else!

The second one reveals the helicopter, which the first one does not. I like the second one better cuz' it gives a feeling of wonder before the greatness of the sky, in contrast with the lonely and helpless helicopter.
At first sight, the original photo led me to think of you taking a photo of the volcano crater from above. (sorry :P)

Thanks for looking and commenting. No need to apologize. I think there's a bit of an optical illusion going on too, with some clouds hanging down from the cloud deck overhead and casting their shadow up onto the bottom of the deck overhead. It play tricks with the eyes until you see the helicopter and then the brain sort of "snaps" things around.

I like this one the best so far: is there any way to bring up the helicopter a little? What about a tighter crop? I marked up a thumbnail with one possibility: it keeps the helicopter at the left 1/3, and brings the sunrise line to the right 1/3. It's close to 2x1 aspect, and is a slightly bigger enlargement, so the helicopter should stand out a bit more.

i love the colors as an abstract photo but at first i had no idea of what i was looking at. i thought it was a picture of lava to be honest with you. although i like photos that make you wonder what the picture is. like you have too look at it for a few minutes to figure out what your looking at. the saturation might be too high. i liked the cropped photo the best ( the one with some land) it makes it more obvious as to what your looking at. but then its hard to tell what the focus of the picture is. either way i wish i was there to see that sunrise it looks beautiful.
