Re: Gaffer tape or filter holder ?
I don't really like Canon's way the lens hoods attach. It is just too darn easy to knock one off with the slightest jar.
I carry an extra hood of each type on trips, I lost the hood for my 70-200mm f/4L IS lens by trying to peek the lens out of a partially opened window in a Chinese hotel and lost the hood for my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens by bumping it while boarding a Venice water taxi.
I have not lost a hood since I have secured my hoods to the lens with gaffer's tape....
I have two extra hoods for my 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens. I was at a Asian Cultural Fair in San Diego and a guy came up to me and said, I think you dropped this as he handed my a lens hood. I said thanks and put it in my photo vest pocket. I didn't realize until I arrived home that the hood belonged to someone else...

Way too funny!
Re: Gaffer tape or filter holder ?
Thank you Richard. I think Gaffer's tape or may be painter's tape is good to have one in the camera bag , because what I understand from the comments, there might be different uses of it :)

Ya gotta admit that Richard's use is the best. He keeps it in his bag so strangers will give him someone else's lens hood. :D
Re: Gaffer tape or filter holder ?
Hi, Binnur -
3M blue painter's tape is not as "sticky" as regular masking tape. It's mainly used by people who actually paint walls and ceilings to mask off areas not to be painted. Because it's not so sticky, it tends not to leave residue behind or to pull relatively fresh paint off walls, etc. There's also a similar brand that's green and called frog tape that behaves in the same way as the blue tape.
Hope this helps.

Re: Gaffer tape or filter holder ?
From my experience using different types of tapes the duration it is left on and in what environmental conditions is a very significant factor in determining what is best to use in specific circumstances.
Re: Gaffer tape or filter holder ?
IMO, black gaffer's tape looks a little better than silver duct tape or blue masking tape...
