It looks somewhat underexposed. Otherwise a nice photo.

Looks good as a composition, a bit underexposed but easily recognizable. Were you shooting auto or manual?

Thanks for responding. I was shooting in manual. He popped up on me so fast, I didn't have time to make as many adjustments as I would have liked.

Hello, KimC! Welcome to Cambridge in Colour from my part. I liked your composition. As John and Bruce mentioned, your shot is underexposed. As you didnt provide us with shot/camera information, I will just throw some comments on it. You could either have used a higher ISO, lower shutter speed or higher aperture (lower F Number). Sorry if you already know that. If you shot this as a RAW image, this underexposure might be no issue, as you can adjust it on PP (post processing). With such a small JPG file, there is not much that can be done, though. Anyway, just to give you an idea of the exposure, below is one edit I came up with. Hope you dont mind that I've played with your image. If you do, just let me know and I will promptly remove my edit, ok?
I corrected the exposure, play a little with the selective color setting, applied some noise reduction and added a frame. I hope this can be of any help. Here it is:

Thank you for your comprehensive comments. I am just getting into photography. My camera is a Nikon D3300 and I had a Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 lens on when I came across the bug. I was not shooting in RAW at the time. I have a lot to learn and am thankful for websites/input like this. I like what you did to the image - thank you :-)

Welcome to CIC. The exposure has been dealt with but maybe a comment on the composition. The beast is too central and it is looking to the right. The space behind the beast on the left is somewhat wasted and there is a stem sticking in at left that I find distracting.

I would crop this half way between the back end of the beast and the left hand edge. This will give the feeling of the beast having more room to look into (the negative space) on the right hand side. I do like the shallow depth of field and tones in this shot.
