Fireworks for Christina, Mike and Binnur (well, everybody)

Ok. I did learn a lesson. Get there early enough so as to get good seats. This is a situation where front row was just too close. Most of the fireworks I did cut off. Next time, I will be back further. Nothing like having ash fall on you and your camera equipment. I was literally looking up.

I did shoot bulb this time, and I am a convert. Completely and utterly in love. Thank you Binnur.

What I found about bulb. Keep the shutter open for as long as you like. If there is a break in the action, release. Multiple exposures make for really cool pictures.

These were all processed in RAW, only. Noise reduction, increase black points, increased vibrance just a little. Some sharpening. Other than that, converted to jpeg and sized for posting here.

Next time, I will try for some shots that have anchors - like people, scenery, etc.

These were shot bulb, WB was kelvin, exposures varied, F11, ISO 100.

    Amazing.
Did you bulb all the way through or bulb/shield/unshield the lens?

Frank, thank you. It was much fun.

Bobo, um...bulb all the way?. Just sat there, oh'ed and ah'ed with my finger pressed on the remote. I did not slide open the slide and leave it there.Sometimes I got so excited I forgot to take my finger off!!!

All of them work well for me, Marie. What Kelvin value did you use?

    Dear Mike,

can I say I don't know and where do i check in the menu? What ever is default for the 7d? I get truer colors from Kelvin, without the color cast. I think it may be a tad on the "cooler" side. LOLs I thought it was automatic - kinda like WB Auto.

I'm not a Canon user, but page 70 of your manual indicates that for "fully automatic" modes, auto white balance is used. My guess is that that's also the default setting for other modes but it's only a guess. It's clear from page 72 that using a Kelvin value is definitely not a default setting. You might want to brush up on your camera's white balance settings.

By the way, the metadata of your last image indicates that you used Auto White Balance, not a Kelvin temperature. That makes sense. I didn't check the other images but I'd bet a substantial amount of money that you used that setting for all of them.

    LOLs, Mike

No money. You would have won a sure bet. I am sheepish! I was indeed using Auto White Balance. Just FYI, I checked the menu, and Kelvin is 5200. But, really, I do switch between the two.

These are nice images. July 4 does not have the same significance here and we did not get the same opportunities for fireworks.

I understood that these were taken as raw images and converted to JPEG on the computer. If that is the case, the white balance setting in the camera is irrelevant and the white balance is chosen in ACR or the equivalent. For the majority of my pictures, I use the " as shot" option although these might be an exception where you want to get the most out of the fireworks colours.

Not to beat up on Marie, but the point is that she thought she was using a Kelvin temperature when she was actually using Auto White Balance. The White Balance setting is irrelevant when shooting RAW files only if we are aware of the camera setting and have made a conscious decision about whether or not to change it during post-processing. It's clear that she made a conscious decision not to change it because she liked the look of her photos. Great decision in my mind!

Hi Marie, these are very nice shots. I'm glad that you are happy with the bulb mode. It is nice to have control and it is practical. Just press the button on your remote release and stop it whenever you want

    Thanks, Binnur.

I actually use bulb mode for other shots (like my lightning shots) so am familiar with it. I just never considered using it for fireworks displays, so, for that, I thank you.

Thank you, Rita, Randy and Tony for viewing and commenting.

John, Dan and David, as always, thank you for contributing. I value your opinions.

    Christina,

I am so glad we could all share. Your fireworks images are so classy with the cityscape on the horizon. I am envious of your position and opportunity. Keepers.
