Really neat bug photos. I like the detail you can see in the eyes.

    Hi David,

There is more to it than that. I've managed a couple of dragon files and other critters with my macro lens, but never a shot where the head and eyes fills the frame with such sharp focus and DOF. Yesterday I tried to photograph a funny looking insect that landed on a patio table. The only thing between us was my camera... Grabbing focus on the eyes, head on, even using manual focus was very challenging and I still couldn't fill the frame (105 mm macro lens) or manage enough DOF... Or balance the exposure... not enough DOF (Aperture 16), too dark SS 160 and ISO 2000... Hand held.

Yes, that is the correct spelling for Brunei. How do you grab focus on the eyes, head on when you are so close trying to fill the frame with just the bugs head?

One tip i got from Steven from Brunei, if that's how you spell it was when Damsel and Dragonfly's take off they nearly always return to the same spot!

Hi Christina, this is how 99% of the time i shoot macro, settings-Camera set to manual-ISO 200, SS 200, F11-F14 and diffused flash, nearly always flash as it will give you nice shake free shots. I set my lens to 1-1 mag in M Mode, then move back and forth until my subject comes into focus and click, of course the bug has to be in the mood too Also remember the larger the subject the easier it is to fill the frame and if you nail the focus you can crop a little to fill the frame even more! My shots are also 99.9% hand held so the flash really helps with this

Hope this helps, will look forward to your images

    David

Great shots - love the detail of the outer eyes in the second shot. Almost looks like fresnel lenses.
