Nice capture. Certainly illustrates it's reputation. Are there many of these left in the wild? I would hate to meet one.

We saw some while visiting a park in Melbourne last fall. I have a couple of shots of them but not near as mean looking as this one. Great capture.

That's a great photo of a devil Paul and yes still a nice part of the world.
Devils are mainly scavengers the only way you would wind up on their menu would be if you were dead in the bush.
They are on the endangered species list since the 80s or 90s after they were dying out from a contagious facial tumor, pretty sad really as they are an iconic little beastie and quite cute when young. I have held a young one at the Tasmania zoo in Launceston and the keepers told me that they don't show any sort of aggression until about two years of age. I think I have some photos taken that day somewhere and will post some after work today.

For those interested this link gives you loads of info about them http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tasmanian_devil

    Cheers, Greg

    Re: Tasmania

Thank you all for commenting. Sometimes they are almost cute. I took a small video clip of one cleaning itself and have tried to convert to a GIF file so you can all see.

    Tasmania

    Hope it works.

P.S. It seems to work but for upload speed the colours have been reduced to the extent that I have lost the bright pink of its tongue.
P.S.S. Replaced with a version with a few more colours - a bit better.

That works fine Paul and they can look cute or like this,

    Tasmania

    Tasmania

Images aren't much but I thought you might like to see their armoury.
They are not real popular with farmers here as they will take new born lambs and devils that have been caught in traps have been known to chew through their own leg to escape.

Are you trying to scare anyone that is thinking of visiting Tasmania. A pity the grass got in the way of the eyes in your second shot but both show the teeth very well. I was surprised at how black and high the lustre of the noses seem to be. Still the GIF photo indicates they spend a bit of time polishing them.

No not trying to scare the visitor away Paul, the devils are no threat to us, but the snakes and spiders breed in the millions here and have been known to devour small children when an opportunity presents itself
