Street Photography - Southern Ethiopia - Old Sidama Man

As we headed north to Addis Ababa, we stopped in a settlement of the Sidama ethnic group.

This old man saw us taking pictures of the villagers and started walking towards us, so I took the opportunity to take some shots as he approached me.




The lighting was not particularly good, so lots of burning to reduce the glare and dodging to reduce the dark shadows under his eyes. I'm shooting wide open and focusing on his eyes to get that super narrow depth of field.

No conversation - he just wandered in and after checking us out, joined the other villagers. They do not speak any languages that I speak and I certainly do not speak theirs...

I wonder...

This was in a village where they had traditionally grown coffee, but because of low prices, they were ripping out the coffee plants and replacing them with Khat plants (a very mild narcotic), because of higher profitability. I wonder if the old guy was just happy from chewing some of the "product".
