    Emerging from the Mist

Another one from the Oregon coast and still more to come. Processing images from the area is proving more of a challenge that I thought they would be due to the ocean mist that hug the coast. It adds a great deal of atmosphere but creates a lot of noise in the images.

In this one I wanted to retain the mist created as the surf battered the monolith and the composition is intentionally minimalistic as I wanted to emphasize the vastness of the lone rock emerging from the ocean floor.

    Emerging from the Mist

Any and all C&C is welcome as usual.

    Hi Shane:
I think you have potential for a very nice photo here. Your subject is the monolith and how the surf and mist play on it. I would crop to an HD 16x9 size and eliminate as much of the sky as I could. The flat, gray sky doesn't add to the photo. Then add a GND and play with those effects a bit. A slight bump up on saturation might help too, if it isn't overdone.

    Keep shooting!

I like that photo pretty well. I wouldn't want to add too much contrast or anything that would make the mist disappear. If you try a different crop, remember the rule of thirds, (in many or most cases), which says the picture should be mostly sky or mostly earth- as it is now

I like it. Mist is great for those atmospheric, low-contrast shots. Don't be tempted to load in more contrast. Very often I lower contrast with such shots.

In this one I wanted to retain the mist created as the surf battered the monolith and the composition is intentionally minimalistic as I wanted to emphasize the vastness of the lone rock emerging from the ocean floor.
I think you achieved what you set out to do. Well done.

I like the use of the sky in this shot, Shane. If anything I would be tempted to try to make more of the mist.

And this from Shane who only last week questioned her ability to compose a landscape.

I like the sky as is, but you could crop just a slight amount from the top.

    Re: Emerging from the Mist

Thank you everyone! The processing of this image was all about a balance between the contrast that was needed to really show the island at its best while still retaining the sea mist surrounding it.

Apart from the development of the RAW file most of my editing was done on a selection of the island and I added a gradient on the sky to bring out what little structure there was in the clouds.

Thank you Frank! I'm working on a couple of more "rock shots" where the composition is a bit tighter so stay tuned.
