Refine Edge Brush Problem

I am running Photoshop CS5 and my refine edge is active BUT the paint brush doesn't work and appears like the traditional do not enter sign (circle with a slash through it) and beeps at me whenever I try to use it.

A quick search of the internet talks about video cards and resetting preferences. To my knowledge I haven't change the former and have no idea how to do the latter.

My guess is that I have unwittingly changed something but have no idea what/when (yesterday maybe) or how

I think that I finally figured this out...it was the check mark in the remember settings box that appears to have cause the problem. Once I unchecked it I could use the brush again.

If in doubt just start clicking...

Whenever I find a fix for a software problem, I usually write it down on a notepad for later assistance, then I tend to lose the notepad.

Oh John, you have no idea how often I have done that! Then I find that it's almost worse knowing that the answer is written down somewhere than not knowing the answer at all
