    Airplane

In my quest to learn and use more of the manual controls thought I'd start soliciting some feedback, my main goal is to become more productive and effective at producing correctly set images in manual mode and I am aware I will need to take many to get the few good ones we all aspire towards creating, so here goes...

I was near the airport again today so took a couple of shots after setting and using the manual AWB control option.

Before and after images using Snapseed adjustments to try and correct some of what I got wrong. Note I don't use any other software mainly because my lap top/PC rarely gets turned on nowadays, if any one knows of any IPad PP tools better than Snapseed I'm all ears.

Sky was hazy but as you leave the lower third of the sky it turns bluer, all I can see is washed out sky though! How do I get the balance right as this is a common challenge I come up against. I can also see a few mistakes in composition eg. Missing the tail end on the right with the top shot... (Another topic another day... Looking for tips on using live view or the view finder as a glasses wearer)...

All and any critique welcome as it's my first picture post...

And one from last week with the IPad given a bit of snapseed treatment FWIW...

    Airplane

I have other issues with my skills I need improving but will save them for another post, thread, thanks for looking

    Jim,

When you wrote " manual AWB" I think you meant just "WB" otherwise the camera would select WB for you. Which WB temperature did you use?

Yes I meant WB, On the Nex 5N you have an option to take a photo of the area there is a centre spot and the manual setting is registered and identifies the best setting based on the reading at the time. I have to be honest I didn't make a note of the colour I just selected Ok assuming it would make a better judgement that AWB or any of the pre sets.

On checking the info it only shows the settings as manual?

Sorry another learning curve I guess, perhaps to make a note of the colour balance.

    Jim,

I wondered because the third image is either very underexposed or used one of the lighting white balances. What was the shutter speed, ISO for that image?

    Re: Airplane

    Jim,

A couple of items to look into, the WB settings in the exif data you supplied, what is the WB custom setting and is it applied to any of these images. Is WB custom just a listing of what options are available? Also, WB shift AB -1, did the camera apply this shift to any of the images? And lastly, center-weighted average metering mode, where was your focus indicator for the third image? Consider change metering mode to matrix. I'm surprised that the camera chose such a fast shutter speed for this image at this particular time of day. Something you were focusing on must have indicated to the camera that a fast shutter speed was possible.

Soo... Just settled in to our holiday destination and have time to relax.

WB manual setting is a test shot taken aiming at the chosen area, you then select the setting displayed if the a image suits you taste I guess, I have seen figures (so far) ranged from 4,400K up to 9,900k, not sure what was registered for these images as I tried a couple of different settings. Any other settings like AB would have been set by the camera.

Also touched the screen to pick the focus spot, was supposed to be the airplane. I am struggling to get an accurate focus point quite a lot tbh, have recently moved to wearing glasses and the change seems to make it awkward at times to see where my focus point is. Hoping that improves with time.

Thanks for the interest, seems it have double posted this thread too somehow only partially in the other one!?! ...
