Nicely captured. That dark strip and spot by his head is a bit distracting.

Cheers, Binnur. I was using a zoom lens at 200mm focal length on this one (a rarity since my favorite is 35mm) so he didn't know I was taking his picture. Hence I was too far to give him my shoe polish for make-up and he didn't notice my chicken costume.

The image is a good candidate for a black and white transformation? Just curious, why did you title your post "Courage"?

Thanks for notcing, IssieK. Just some lame title - apart from the person losing his wife from cancer recently, losing his job, and undergoing heart surgery. He is still standing firm. I believe he is blessed with courage. He doesn't know I took his photo at that time but I thought I would pay tribute to him.

Rob, you know what? I was going to write into my post above that he looked as if he was in a hospital and had some bad news. I think I guessed something close to real but how did I know

Don't know, Binnur... but you have a gift of being very sensitive toward how others feel. Cheers.

I think the comments above reflect the fact that your portraits, Rob, demonstrate that wonderful and rare ability of seeing into the person, beyond the surface. You present the person, not just a a pictorial likeness of them.

I agree. What we have seen from you so far would I think, form the basis of a really interesting album (or even exhibition) if you ever feel inclined.

    Re: Courage

For me, it would have been nice if you have written what you wrote about him when you uploaded the shot...so the sensitivity can accompany your narrative and the picture itself, but then that is just me. I like a shot to have a story not just a shot to wonder why the title of the post was such. Some shots tells a story in itself. No words needed. But to be fair to some duff people like me who lacks the early morning thinking at 3AM and accessing this forum on a crappy computer, it will help to understand...just a friendly suggestion from my local newspaperboy...

A truly moving image & story.
The elder members of our society have many hurdles to face and may miss out on respect and appreciation or assistance as we go about our busy day to day lives.

It's nice to see that you handle colour candid shots as well as you do B&W work.

A beautifully lit image. The long lens really helped here by keeping your subject sharp and flat while throwing the background nicely out of focus. It's much tougher doing a shot with a long lens like that in a street photography situation. It looks like you have some really nice fill light bouncing off the wall on camera right to provide a decent lighting ratio.

I especailly like the background balance; a bit of colour camera left to balance off the fairly plain background right behind your subject. It provides some nice balance; not quite negative space, but certainly getting there.

There are hundreds of stories that this face seems to tell...and you have captured them all beautifully. Very nice work.
