I was dog sitting, Stanley, my daughter's Sheltie this afternoon and took the camera. Here are a couple of my favorite captures. Window light only.

What a gorgeous looking animal. In terms of the images, I'm finding that slatted feature (is it a blind) in the background is distracting. However, in the second image I think teh windows and the window furniture works really well. For me they very much add to the image. And pose and the ligth on Stanley in that one, are great.

One sucker for a beautiful animals, I love both of them...I am glad you have leather furnitures...it is easier to wipe clean.

About the blinds that Donald mentioned in the first one: if you darken the bright tones, that issue will go away for me.

Consider making monochrome images of both of them.

Thanks for the compliments and suggestions. He looks a bit disheveled in the first one since we had been playing and I did not know where his brush was. He is just over a year old and is a bundle of energy (lot more than me). His parents are both champions. A beautiful animal, wonderful pet and companion. I had Shelties for over 30 years; they're my favorite breed.

The window shot (2nd) establishes the setting in my daughter's home. This will become more important in future years for their family. Stanley is creating lots of fun memories here for all of us but especially for my grandchildren (their first dog).

Really good looking images and dog.

We have two rough collies - had three but the one I use as an avatar passed away a few moths ago - my wife is thinking of shelties when the time comes for the others as she says they are smaller and will be easier for her to handle.

A beautiful dog and well captured. The wood window frames compliment his coloring nicely. Agree with the comments about the slats in BG on the first shot. Simply darkening them would do wonders. Overall nicely done.

Paul - I think the lighting in your images is brilliant. They have an almost studio-like / environmental portrait look to them.

The window and railing are a bit distracting, but getting a dog to pose in the optimal setting is just not realistic...

Photographing pets takes on a deeper meaning when you can capture their character in a photo. It’s a good idea to photograph pets in their preferred spots or enjoying a much-loved pastime such snoozing on the porch or catching a Frisbee. To capture a pet’s character, you can ask yourself what is unique about your pet and try to capture that uniqueness on camera.
