    Weeds in the garden

My bride's flower garden is over run with fireweed. I convinced her not to pull it up by the roots. One man's weed is another man's flower?

You are back home, Dan!!! Or was this taken before or in-between the boating sessions? Nice kind of flower. How tall are they? I like the shot very much...the angle of the sunshine is just right...
    Cheers...

Thanks, guys. Izzie, I took this one right after we got back home from a boat trip. We were putting stuff up and I looked out the kitchen window and saw the lighting so grabbed a camera for a quick shot.

Nice capture. They really stand out against the dark. Brings back memories of our trip to Alaska, there were literally fields of them and they lined the roadside for miles.

Thanks, Irene. Glad you've visited Alaska. Though it's not so different from much of BC and the Yukon. Fireweed is probably the signature wild flower in Alaska because of just what you mentioned. I love them when in bloom. They are about done for this year and conventional wisdom here is that when the fireweed goes to seed there are six weeks before the first snow

But do we call then fireweeds ? I saw loads in Yorkshire a couple of weeks ago but couldn't find any 'common' name for them.

You folks don't likely experience quite the number of forest fires as the Pacific Northwest/Western CA/Alaska. It's called fireweed here because it is one of the first things to grow back after fires.

No, I've never heard that name. Dan's explanation clearly illustrated the reason for it.

Thanks, Binnur. It was such a beautiful morning and one of those moments when you simply have to stop whatever is getting in the way of photography and take a shot When backlit like this the blooms are absolutely flourescent.

in another month or so if you are lucky you may capture the almost snow like effect of their seeds being blown in a late summer storm?
