    I would go with #2. Empty space in front looks natural (to me). The first image looks like a miss to me.

    Thanks for the comments. In the first I used PSE's golden ratio crop method and to me placing the golden spot only looked viable with this crop. I didn't like the placement so decided to post both versions. My other choice would be for a tighter crop.

    John - I'm with Dan on this one. Give the plane some "headroom" in the direction that it is moving towards.

    This is often the best thing to do, whether you are looking at cars, planes, animals or people. A bit of extra space in the direction they are moving towards, or with people and animals, in the direction they are looking towards, if they are looking off camera right or left.

    Works well with bugs too, if you decide to go that route.
