Nice effort.
Great effort brian, love the background, but it looks like the focus point is the leading edge of the far wing which seems wrong to me, also you need to get the next fly to turn around and face you... and preferably smile
To me, this is a damn good shot!
Plenty of details everywhere, the far wing is in line with the head and
both are sharp enough… if I may suggest;
• the background (that is not disturbing in any way) is not bringing any
interesting info to the subject, I would crop further so to give more frame
real estate to the fly, rendering more accessible the sharp areas to the eye.
• in the process, try a version where the subject would not be dead centred
vertically.
Unfortunately, I think this one doesn't work well. I agree with Mark. The perspective is not an interesting one, and the focus isn't in the best spot. In addition, the lighting is not adequate (although you might be able to fix this in postprocessing).
You could have put the focus point on the eyes even with the bug in this position, but I don't think that is as big an issue as the perspective. You can't get them to turn around, as you point out. You just have to maneuver yourself, or wait for this bug or another to put itself in a better position. Occasionally, a top-down perspective is interesting, but usually not top down from behind.
If there is one thing this shot teaches it is that there are many talented people in CiC with marvelously different taste.
I agree with Kodiak - I like it, but a bit of asymmetric cropping would help. I do it by trial & error, but I'd start by trying with less of the stone. You got the smile on the fly's a**e, though, which is always a challenge.
Certainly not. Since I joined CiC my skills have improved. Improved because people such as yourself take the time and effort to point out where I could have done things differently. Even if I don't see it as an improvement I get to add another arrow to my quiver. Every arrow is one more option and a potentially better shot the next time.
