    Nissin i40 on Nikon DX

    Hello all,

I am a new member living in Switzerland and have a question concerning the newly announced Nissin i40, I use a D7100 and was wondering whether the Nissin i40 senses the type of camera it is mounted on as per the SB-700? Any general thoughts regarding this flash compared the the SB-700 would be welcome! The reason I am leaning towards the Nissin is the size factor however nothing is yet decided, thanks in advance, Mark

As you aren't getting an answer. I might be concerned on a full frame camera and suspect the Nikon gun would make a better job of that.

Apart from that it comes down to power and specification. One thing I have noticed is that Nisin produce separate manuals for each of the camera brands the gun can be used on. This way you can see what they will actually do on a specific make of camera. I was surprised that the gun seems to be fully compatible with Olympus and Panasonic cameras even down to offering high speed flash which can be used at any camera shutter speed.

I have the Nissin Di 466 and its good. I also had Nissin Di 866 and its powerful at less than half the price of Canon's offering. I would assume the performance would be similar with Nikon as well.

Mark - I use a Nissin flash on my D7000 and cannot fault it, although I have no experience with an SB-700. I usually use the 'P' setting and it balances the light very satisfactorily. I don't think you would be disappointed.

Hi John, good point for the full frame, however I think that will be sticking with DX size for a while as my lens investment has been quite high (according to my wife anyway!) The only real unknown is for the zoom feature being linked to the camera type or not, I know that the sb-700 adjusts automatically for sensor size would be nice to know if the Nissin does as well, will keep you posted, Mark

Given how simplistic the controls on the i40 are, and that even the Di866 doesn't adjust for crop factor, my guess is that no, zooming on the i40 won't take crop factor automatically into account. BTW, guide number wise, it's nearly as good as an SB-700. The official spec from Nissin is that iso 100/@35mm, it's 27m. The SB-700's is 28m.

I doubt if the crop / full frame makes much odds really. It's just that for the same view the light is spread over a larger area on a ff camera which might make corner drop off more noticeable.

I would be interested in the Olympus one but have the FL-36R and it's very similar to that in power levels.
