    Ponderosa and Riverstones

While rafting on the Salmon River in Idaho last week, this exposed root of Ponderosa Pine caught my eye as its weathered look blended in with the river rock. Thoughts and comments? How could I improve the composition?

Your composition is very ok I think… but since the wood is your subject, the
image would have benefit from a somewhat greater DoF.

Daniel ^^^ beat me to the comment in my head. Anyway if you chose to correct his in PP, I think the best solution is to cut off a bit of the bottom to concentrate on the sharpness of the portion you focused on. Otherwise, perhaps re-shoot?

One thought it to crop it to 4:5 or 1:1 to get rid of the out-of-focus foreground and put the attention on to where it should be, that gorgeous root.

The other thought, but not to do with composition, would be to convert it to B & W, add in some more Local Contrast Enhancement (LCE) and sit back to admire the wonderful study of tone and texture.
