Rule #1 in The Papa’s Handbook clearly states that Beloved Granddaughters get whatever they want from Papa!

So when #2 Granddaughter wanted to have a basketball shoot it was just a matter of me getting my A in G and make it happen.

She had specific ideas as to what she wanted and had no qualms running the show! My job was just to make darn sure she got what she wanted and how she wanted it and that she got it yesterday!

So after the shoot and her selections I promised I would get one finished for her before she had to go home.

This is the one she wanted first. So that I am in full compliance with Rule #1 of TPH this is exactly what she got! It was her fave for reasons unfathomable to me.

She likes mono, except for she likes color! So I am obligated to do one of each for each shot!

What the heck good is it anyway to have a Papa with a bunch of camera stuff if you can’t get a dadgone basketball shot or 50!

Please feel free to let me know what I need to know to make it right!

How could she not like this? Well done, and it's a good thing; otherwise, she would have disowned you. I agree with John about the spill light, as it lessens the dramatic mood just a tad.

It was her fave for reasons unfathomable to me.

I'm not a parent, but my understanding is that that pretty much distinguishes teenagers from the rest of humanity.

Beautiful shot - so my advice is to listen to your grand-daughter some more - she has some very fine ideas about composition, as you and she have created a timeless shot. You obviously work well together as a team.

The "halo" John mentions could have been avoided with a
1• good understanding of the inverse square law! and…
2• better control through the application of proper ratio "main vs fill" lights.

There is a touch of spill and really up to you whether you like it or not. Easy enough to fix in post, and as Daniel says, if you are setting up your lights and metering as you do so, you can certainly avoid the light spill by either turning down your light a bit or moving your subject away from the wall prior to taking the shot.

After reading them I went back over what I did and I think I found where I went south!

While there is some spill on the BG (I don’t really have the room I would like to have and I like to shoot long so I have to fudge the subject back toward the BG sometimes). I made it more noticeable by playing with a vignette. It appears I left the vignette in darkening part of the BG more than it should have been and succeeded in making the spill even more noticeable.

Or at least that’s my theory!

I don’t think I particularly mind that it’s there necessarily but certainly something I needed to be aware of.

Sounds all too familiar. My youngest daughter bought a new hat and wanted a picture of herself wearing it. I rattled of a couple of dozen really nice shots of her wearing it. Which one does she pick?

One of the test shots that I made when I was setting up the lights and adjusting my lighting ratios. Go figure...

I dig the lighting here. I actually like the light spill on the background. It looks more traditional and not shopped in PS.

Terry, this is another wonderful portrait which captures something of the subject's character.

You are lucky to have two grand daughters who are willing to have their photos taken. Mine (7 y.o.) turns her head or runs away when she sees me with the camera. I have many shots of the back of her - still, I guess that says something about her, too.

These girls are teenage girls. At times they are moody, sullen, sometimes just downright snarly! Other times they Light the World!

Enjoy your 7 yo’s while you can. It won’t last forever!

As for the the light scatter I wonder if by losing it you will make the shot look a bit clinical?
